Documentation of the expert dialogue Switch please! Fair procurement of e-vehicles

This documentation summarises the presentations and discussions of the expert dialogue on the socially just and ecological procurement of e-vehicles.

On 16 November 2023, we held the expert dialogue "Switch please! Fair procurement of e-vehicles" was organised. Together with relevant stakeholders, we discussed how the procurement of e-vehicles can be made more socially just and ecologically sustainable. This documentation summarises the main points of the presentations and discussions.

The public sector has an important role to play in renewing and expanding its own vehicle fleet. It can make a significant contribution to the expansion of local public transport and the conversion of vehicles to low-emission drive systems by increasing investment and creating socially fairer and more environmentally sustainable procurement systems. Together with the automotive industry, federal states and local authorities can fulfil their responsibility to achieve the Paris climate targets by actively shaping a sustainable transport transition.

However, the extraction of the natural resources required for e-mobility goes hand in hand with serious social and ecological risks and grievances in many places. Strengthening human rights and environmental due diligence obligations along the entire supply chain is therefore particularly important. The public sector has a special role model function in shaping the transport transition in a socially and ecologically responsible manner.

We discussed how this can be achieved for both public procurement bodies and companies (together) and what challenges and opportunities arise together with stakeholders from local public transport, administration, the automotive industry and civil society at the expert dialogue "Umsteigen bitte! Fair procurement of e-vehicles on 16 November 2016.
