Restrict Monopoly Power, Strengthen Democracy - An Introduction to Critique of Monopolies and Antitrust Law
The more powerful a company is, the more political and societal influence it can exert, ultimately posing a threat to our democracy and livelihoods.
The power of large corporations has grown massively in recent decades. In many sectors, individual companies like Google or Amazon dominate the market. This has devastating consequences: monopolies impose their interests, undermine the democratic process with their power, create problematic dependencies, and hinder the urgently needed socio-ecological transformation.
It is time to collectively oppose this monopolization. In fact, a new international movement is emerging that aims to revive political instruments against monopoly power. A key focus here is antitrust law.
Antitrust and competition policy have become technocratic fields with little public and civil society involvement. In recent years, this has started to change again: it is worth rediscovering this fundamental tool for shaping our economy.
