Shaping a Circular Future
Recommendations for the negotiations on the EU Ecodesign Regulation
The Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR) creates a new framework for the definition of ecodesign requirements. The position paper we support formulates recommendations for the negotiations between the EU Commission, Council and European Parliament to ensure that the regulation becomes an important milestone in the transition to a circular economy.
Design plays a crucial role in the circularity of a product, e.g. in terms of reparability, recyclability or the potential for reprocessing. The Ecodesign Regulation for Sustainable Products (ESPR) creates a new framework for the definition of ecodesign requirements for products and is therefore crucial for the implementation of the circular economy. The ESPR will form the basis for the development of product-specific delegated acts and will define both the scope and the requirements of these acts.
The EU Commission, the Council and the European Parliament are currently negotiating the regulation in the so-called trilogue. The position paper compares the positions of these three institutions and highlights the key elements that must be included in the final regulation.
In order for the regulation to contribute to ending the era of non-repairable products and become an important milestone in the transition to a circular economy, the EU institutions should take the recommendations formulated in the position paper into account.
