The server slaves
Rights violations and forced practices in the IT hardware supply chain of European universities - new report published today
"We stand at the assembly line all day and repeat the same task over and over again. This has nothing at all to do with my training. None of us want to be here, but we have no choice. The university has told us that we won't get our diploma if we refuse."
Xu Min is one of 25 young students and vocational school students interviewed for the report "The Server Slaves" who are doing forced internships at the Wistron factory in Zhongshan in southern China. They work 10-12 hours a day, six days a week, for up to five months under conditions that violate the ILO Convention against Forced Labor and Chinese law.
The report was published by WEED, Stiftung Asienhaus and Forum Environment and Development in cooperation with the Good Electronics Network and other European NGOs. It shows that the servers purchased by universities in Europe are manufactured under conditions of forced labor.
