Webinar: Inequality and Colonial Continuities in the International Financial System

Presentation and discussion with Dr. Ndongo Samba Sylla (International Development Economics Associates) about inequality and colonial continuities in the international financial system

Are the rules crooked? Colonial structures remain deeply embedded in the global financial architecture, from the governance of the IMF and World Bank to the standing of the US Dollar and unequal money flows between North and South. This session explores these structural inequalities, highlighting where change is most needed.

Please register for the events free of charge using this form. We look forward to seeing you!

We have also prepared a small glossary of terms related to international financial policy to serve as a cheat sheet for those whose heads are spinning from the jargon. You can find the English version here and the German version here. We hope this will help you to keep an overview during the events, but of course we want to explain everything as clearly as possible!

The webinar is the first event of our series "Of Dollar, Debt, and Power: Understanding the International Financial System" running from February until June.

How are the multiple crises worldwide linked to the international financial system? Why is money not flowing to where it is most urgently needed? Who benefits from the inequality in the global financial system? And what do private financial investors have to do with it?

Our series of events looks at these and other systemic questions. In interactive and hybrid events, together with experts from academia and civil society, we explain some of the basic structures of the international financial system and critically question existing power relations. Together, we will explore more democratic and fairer alternatives that are being discussed internationally.

Participation does not require any prior academic knowledge - all interested parties are welcome!

The other events will be in German language and will be hybrid events happening in person in Berlin Neukölln and online.
