Land Rights, Local Resilience and Feminist Opportunities of the World Social Forum

Land, water, and traditional seeds are the lifeline of millions of people— particularly women, who serve as the primary guardians of food sovereignty. Yet, in West Africa, they are increasingly threatened by land grabbing and extractive economic models that marginalize women’s traditional land rights. Strong social and feminist movements are active in many West African countries, opposing these injustices and building alternatives based on solidarity—locally, regionally, and internationally.

We warmly invite you to this event that highlights struggles for land rights and feminist struggles in West Africa and focuses on international solidarity and global movement work. Our guest is Burry Tunkara, an activist from The Gambia and a member of the organizing team for the 2026 World Social Forum in Cotonou. Resilience is more than survival and to that note Burry will share accounts of the struggle against land grabbing, the importance of gender justice in these struggles, how local and regional alliances have emerged, and the role that international networking and solidarity play in this process.

Das Weltsozialforum ist seit über 20 Jahren ein globaler Treffpunkt sozialer Bewegungen und NGOs, die sich für soziale Gerechtigkeit, und Demokratie Entwicklung einsetzen – Themen, die aktuell weltweit zunehmend unter Druck geraten. Gerade jetzt braucht es mehr internationale Vernetzung und Austausch!

Deshalb laden wir euch herzlich ein zu einem online Lunch & Learn mit Burry Tunkara. Sie ist Mitorganisatorin des diesjährigen WSF, das im August in Benin stattfindet. Burry ist zudem Mitglied des westafrikanischen Bewegungsbündnisses für Land- und Wasserrechte und Präsidentin der Vereinigung zum Schutz der Rechte von Hausangestellten in Gambia. Gemeinsam wollen wir das Weltsozialforum, seine Bedeutung für soziale Bewegungen und die Zivilgesellschaft sowie Möglichkeiten zur beteiligung vorstellen. Die online Veranstaltung wird auf Englisch stattfinden.

Vom 15.–20. Januar 2025 fahren wir mit dem Solibus in die Schweiz, um gemeinsam mit StrikeWEF bei der jährlichen Protestwanderung ein starkes Zeichen für Klimagerechtigkeit und eine demokratische, gerechte Weltwirtschaft zu setzen.

Dich erwarten spannende Workshops, internationaler Austausch, Vernetzung und gemeinsamer Protest. Die Bildungsreise wird als Bildungsurlaub anerkannt.

Sei dabei. Auf geht´s - solidarisch nach Davos!
